The University since its inception has been saddled with the responsibility of intensifying the training of a professional workforce that would bring about rapid change and development to the industrial, economic and political sectors of the nation. Driven by a mission “to provide a conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and development, where students and staffs will interact and compete effectively with other counterparts globally”, the University has grown over time starting up with just three (3) faculties, to having twelve (12) faculties, offering over 60 departmental courses; a college of medicine, and several research centers and institutes. The University of Lagos currently has three campuses. Two (2) in Yaba (Akoka and the recently created campus at the former school of Radiography), and one in Surulere; it’s College of Medicine located in Idi-araba. The main campus at Akoka is surrounded by the Lagos Lagoon providing a very beautiful view around the University. Enrollment into the University has grown from a startup intake of 131 students in 1962 to over 40,000 students. Unilag is fondly referred to as the “University of first choice” and the “Nation’s pride”. Students and alumni of Unilag are popularly addressed as "GREAT AKOKITES".
