Situated in the centre of Lagos Island’s commercial district, Tafawa Balewa Square was where Nigeria celebrated its independence on 1 October 1960 only that it was just a mere race course then. The Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS) is a 14.5-hectare (35.8-acre) ceremonial ground (originally called “Race Course”) TBS was constructed in 1972 over the site of a defunct rack for horse racing. It is bounded by Awolowo road, Cable Street, Force road and Catholic Mission Street. The square has a capacity for 50,000 people. Facilities at the square include a shopping center, Airline’s Travel Agencies, restaurants and car parking and a bus terminal. The entrance to the square has gigantic sculptures of four white horses hovering above the gate and seven eagles, which are symbols from the national emblem signifying Strength and Dignity respectively. Other monuments in the square include the Remembrance Arcade (with memorials to World War 1, World War II and Nigerian civil war victims) and the 26-storey Independence House, built in 1963 which was for a long time, the tallest building in Nigeria. The entrance of TBS alone is a striking feature that will elicit awe into visitors. Indeed the square is historic in all ramification. A short walk from the square you’ll find the National Museum, featuring the Benin City brasses, traditional ivory carvings, royal crowns and the Nok Terracottas — some of the world’s most ancient artwork. The museum also contains a non-profit crafts centre and parades the ill-fated black Mercedes benz Limousine where former admirable Head of state, General Muritala Ramat Mohammed was slain on his way to Dodan Barracks a day before Velentine in 1976. Some major national events that took place in TBS includes, Nigeria’s independence celebration which took place on 1 October 1960 with the Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, delivering his speech. Democracy Day was also celebrited in the Square, as well as other multifarious events such as musical jamborees and religious gatherings.

This is a huge please, lovely ground for all occasions... Venue of Lagos international Trade Fair... And also the popular The Experience Annual Gospel music festival organised by House on the Rock. There is a very functional Terminus for all areas you might be going. And driving around the area is easy as the traffic is really controlled. It around the Lagos High Courts, and MUSSON center.

It is a huge facility for high octane events like the annual Lagos International Trade Fair organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry. • F
    Friensdwealth Victor
The structures at this square need lots of renovations and maintenance. This should be a centre for tourist attraction and a national monument. I am not impressed with the way the structures facilities and amenities are falling out. The management is only interested in renting fees and shop charges from this centre. If not for the investment of the Lagos State Government through the office of the Former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who added a lovely edifice for the TBS BRT transportation system bus station, there is nothing to impress anyone about this facility. The site seems to be known for so much of religious, Political activities and entanglements.

TBS is good and a great place to visit if you want to see washed up relics. Lagos needs to do a lot of work to take TBS to where it once was. The most interesting thing that happens here every year is The Experience, and it has brought the largest cluster of people to the stadium in December of each year for the past 13 years.

Popularly known as TBS,was the former and oldest Independence arena for inaugurations and handing over of govt of Nigeria before it was taking to Abuja.. I grew up knowing this of history situated close to Western house and Marina,it housed the seat of power the national assembly since the inaugural handing over to the first civilian govt of late Alhaji shehu Shagari, with offices in and without..
  • A
    Airiafo Fred Oriunuebho
TBS is a ceremonial ground which formerly served as a race course. The outside isnow a hub for the Lagos BRT connecting major parts of the city while the grounds is sparingly used for political and religious events. TBS houses a lot businesses ranging from Banks to eateries and clothing stores. Other businesses include pharmacies and grocery stores. There are up to 50 stores in the stadium-like structure which unfortunately are not quite noticeable to guests except those who take the time to go inside. Most people use the place as a transport only. This place should be a big tourist attraction if managed properly. Thankfully it works well for transportation except for the difficult ticket attendants who behave as if they are doing you a favour selling you tickets. Terribly untrained and uncultured attendants they have there.

Tafawa Balewa Square is located on the Lagos Island in Lagos. It is a huge opened space surrounded by walls of seats like a stadium. It is usually used for different events and its opened to the public. There is a big bus terminal close the place and it houses many stores and offices too. The is a big field to its west. A bus terminal to its south, An army barracks to its north, and the popular city mall to its west. The swearing-in of new governors of Lagos State are usually held at the Tafawa balewa square. TBS is adjacent to the popular muson center and the Kings College. Other attractions around it includes; the Governor state house, St. Nicholas Hospital, NECOM House, Broad street, etc.

This place is not only historical but a major landmark in Lagos. It is centre of most National/cultural events in Nigeria. The main bow is very large with many other bows for other events. There is a football field and many others. Adequate security operations, the accessibility walkways for almost every entrance into TBS makes it easy for handicapped to access all facilities. There are corner shops too by well partitioned by the TBS blue BRT terminals. The building however needs maintenance to help it remain as outstanding as always.

This is the ground where Nigeria got its independence. Although externally the premise is used as a terminal for local and government busses; internationally it’s a perfect place for government, church and private events. This place features a bespoke platform that can be customized based on the event that is been hosted. There are also security guards patrolling the fenced and gated premise.

Great Architectural Design. Noticed the Square had one entrance gate and one exit gate. On the entrance gate, there are 12 Red Eagles (6 Left & 6 Right, Opposite Views); 8 White Horses (4 Left & 4 Right, Opposite Views); 3 Eyo Statues & 1 Black Statue (Looks like a Slave or Someone Hopeful, Looking towards the sky with hands in begging/praying form). On the exit gate, there are 12 Red Eagles (6 Left & 6 Right, Opposite Views); 8 White Horses (4 Left & 4 Right, Opposite Views); 3 Eyo Statues & 1 Black Statue (Looks like a Slave or Someone Hopeful, Looking towards the sky with hands in begging/praying form). One Coat of Arms and alot of installed lights which looked not well maintained. Its still a great place but needs proper renovation and preservation.
