L Y N NThis actually a federal museum and not a state museum as the name implies. It is managed by the national commission for museums and monuments. The museum is located on Harley street same as the popular BMH hospital and is easy to locate. Pictures are not allowed inside the Museum for obvious reasons but one is allowed to take pictures outside and of the reception. There is a small entrance fee and one gets an asisted tour of the museum. The museum closes at 4pm, has a lot of parking space and a sit out where one can get drinks. Theme of the museum is "Life in the Niger delta" and it show cases some contemporary art work e.g Terra cotta, flex, the dufuna etc. The museum has 2 galleries. The first one showcases the Economic life in the region both in pictorial as well as objects on display e.g elements of precolonial trade, monies (copper wires, coral beads, bottles, pipes, tobacco), textile looms, arts and craft e.g pottery, fishing techniques and implements, oil exploration and refining, agricultural implements. The second showcases the social life of the region - exhibition of boat regattas, masks and masquerades, head dresses, musical instruments and dance. The building needs to be better maintained to ensure this last for generations to come.
