University of Ibadan Zoological Garden has been in existence for some decades now. My first visit to the zoological garden was almost forty years ago in the 80’s, with wider variety of wildlife and botanical gardens. We got to see a lot of animals during my last visit to the zoo about a year ago.

This is one of the very few zoos I enjoyed visiting, all animals in the zoo had detailed information about their names, where they could be found, their status right in front of the cages. The ambience is not bad, a serene environment, they’ve got lions, giraffe, different kinds of snakes and birds, monkeys, baboons and several other animals, enjoyed looking around and the gate fee is quite affordable.

This is a nice place for mostly children. It gives them opportunity to explore wildlife practically. Entrance fee is relatively cheap, it is #500 per head. As at the time of visit, I saw wild animals like lion and lioness (four of them), giraffe, snakes of different spices, cobra, python, alligator, crocodile and many other ugly crawling animals. I saw monkeys of different kind, bamboo, gorilla and many other spices that I cannot really recognise. I saw birds of different kinds, ostrich, parrot, chicken and others. I looked forward to seeing elephant but unfortunately, there was no elephant at the time of visit. There was no zebra too, though there was a space for it. Above all, I enjoy my visit and really looking forward for a revisit.

The garden is managed by a senior academic staff if the University. If you are in Ibadan, especially on notable holidays, and you have not visited the University of Ibadan Zoological Centre, you will need to revisit Ibadan again.

With time the animal collection grew in number and diversity and the Menagerie gradually became a full fledged Zoo in 1974. It welcomes a large number of visitors from far and near every year. The University of Ibadan Zoo, like most modern zoos, displays wild animals primarily for the conservation of endangered species, as well as for research purposes and education, and so also for the entertainment of visitors. The garden is home to a wide array of animals comprising mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Green monkeys The Zoo is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 8:00 to 18:30 daily. For the hungry The shops at the zoo premises have a wide variety of delicious take-aways and kiosks offer snacks. There are numerous picnic spots located within the Zoo where you can relax in the shade of giant trees. Parking Ample, secure parking space is available at the main entrance of the U.I Zoological Gardens. Security staff is on duty at all parking facilities for your peace of mind. Security Security personnel are on duty 24 hours a day for your convenience. Come prepared for a day filled with fun, fun, FUN!!

Visited the Zoo previously in 2012, and again yesterday. I must there has been lots of improvements. The entrance has been redesigned, there are more animals and the garden looks very green and beautiful. There was a really experienced and friendly guide that led us through the various enclosures. The zoological garden is home to a variety of animals and tree families. The managers have also tried to create close to natural habitats for the animals from snakes to aligators, lions, monkeys and some species that are only seen on National Geographic channel. They can do with more deliberate public and private sector funding/support.
