This national monument is a treasure and once it stood magnificent with stunning works by old masters. However the maintenance has left it in a poor state. Art works that are national treasures, are left to dust and decay. More needs to be done to completely reconstruct and preserve this building and the works within it.

The National Theatre is one of the tourist attractions in Lagos. It is a cultural landmark and architectural masterpiece which has stood the test of time. The National Theatre was constructed in 1976 by former Head of States General Yakubu Gowon. But the final completion of the current edifice standing today was done during the regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. The National Theatre houses ancient art and also invites modern works by new artists. The interior and exterior design of the theatre is very fascinating. The theatre is located at Iganmu Road, Lagos, Nigeria

The National Arts Theatre, Iganmu Lagos was commissioned in 1977 during the FESTAC (Festival of Arts and Culture). The edifice is a beautiful and quite conspicuous one that hosted virtually all the activities of that festival, which was a celebration of African arts, culture and tradition with most countries in Africa and blacks in diaspora in attendance.

National theatre is a monumental tourist site to visit while in Lagos, there are various attractions there to see like a theatre and a museum. You can also have a picnic there with friends and family. You can also view the current rail project going from the national theatre. I just wish the government will do more the restore the national theatre to the original purpose it was meant for and manage the place better.

National theater is a great place to hold an event, great view with lots of parking lots. Its environment is calm with great views. I believe thou that is loosing its touch by the day. The toilet and some halls are not properly managed so it is falling apart. The chair in the hall we used many were in bad shade.

This is a beautiful environment, located behind Covenant Christian Centre at Iganmu, with the expanse of land in the region of 6 hecters of land... The environment is colorful, neatly trimmed and adequately secured. The environment can be use for events and meetings. The theatre is superb and worth visiting all the time. Also this place is historical and with as low as 500 Naira you can be given a tour guide and see lot of artifacts from most cultures in Nigeria.

Constructed in 1976, it is the cultural center for performing arts in Nigeria. The well-equipped hall has the capacity to hold 3000 people. It hosted the Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977. The building has a bar, a restaurant, and 2 grand cinema halls. The great cultural performances coupled with the theatre’s architectural grandeur have pulled the attention of people from various walks of life.

  • C
    Chioma Okorro
A very cool place for multiple events as you can hold one event in Queen Amina Park while another event runs concurrently. It is a good place for artistes - theatre, poets etc as the ambience sits like a village on its own with kiosks where they sell snacks, drinks and what not. If you are going to be there for an open event, I suggest you go fully clothed from neck to feet as there a lot of sand flies around and those things are very brutal to the skin. All in all, it is a place I would love to visit again for theatre productions.

There are several other love hangouts/cosy areas in this place. These coupled with nice peppersoup joints, make it a good place to be. Entry is free, however touts at the grounds may hustle for parking fees. Events can also be held in some halls here.

A historical national monument, "National Theatre", which was completed in 1976. It was used to host African Festival of Arts and Culture, known as Festac 77, in the first quarter of 1977 during which many African countries showcased their cultures including fine arts, music, dances, literature, religion, etc. About 16,000 participants representing 56 African nations and African in other continents performed at the event.

A national monument designed with architecture inspired by the military cap. The long queue of parked trucks cause traffic gridlock around this area lately. It is better to avoid the road enroute Island once its past 6:30am. Yaba- Oyingbo axis might be a better alternative.

You would love the live outside the theatre: its a lovely place to relax. The theatre itself is malaria ground and badly managed, a friend was there a few weeks back for a fashion show and she fell sick from mosquito bites that left scars. The amazing thing about the studio grounds is "the universal studio" workshop. A great representation of combination of talented Nigerian Artist from iron work, to painting, melding and carving. You will love it!

The National Theatre is an architectural masterpiece and a cultural landmark located at Iganmu, in the heart of Lagos. It is easily accessible from every corner of the city. Covering an area of about 23,000 square meters and standing well over 30 meters tall, the multipurpose National Theatre was established for the preservation, presentation and promotion of Arts and Culture in Nigeria. The design for the existing National Theatre in Lagos was taken from the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria. The contract for its construction was signed on April 24, 1973, during Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s regime. Apart from providing a befitting venue for the 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77) which Nigeria successfully hosted in January/February 1977 and for which the National Theatre provided more than adequate venues. Today it’s nice place to go with families where you can watch plays and the place is so conducive making everyone feel alive. They have different event hall for any kind of event all fully air-conditioned and neat.
