Onikan Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Lagos. It is currently used mostly for football matches and it’s the home stadium of various Lagos football teams. The stadium has a capacity of 5,000 people and it is the oldest in Nigeria. Located on the southeastern corner of Lagos Island near Tafewa Balewa Square, the original stadium was built in 1930; then between 1963 and 1973, it became known as the Lagos City Stadium. The current Onikan Stadium was then renovated & reopened for football and cultural activities in the 1980s.

It has played host to many memorable events however, the state government need to work more on traffic within the Island as this is a turn off for would be visitors visiting the stadium in the Island. The stadium is currently going through a rejuvenation. The stadium when completed will be host a standard football pitch metting international standards. It also will host others sports like handball, volleyball, basketball, indoor sport games like table tennis, gymnastics and so on. It will also have a multipurpose hall within to host other functions. I am sure this stadium will make good statement about Lagos and its facility. Great facility.
