Kenny OtesileIt was in 1849 that the Church Missionary Society (CMS) founded a training institute at what later became Abeokuta Grammar School (AGS) site. However, in 1862, it was moved to Lagos because the founders thought Abeokuta was not viable for the project. By 1895, the institute was again moved to Oyo to become the St. Andrew’s College. It was not until 1908 that the Abeokuta Church District Council resolved on the 23rd of April to establish the institution that is today known as Abeokuta Grammar School. However, the school did not become operative until the 16th of July, 1908 at Ita Agbadu and the boarders lived at Barrister Moore’s compound in the area (between Ilogbo and Ijemo Agbadu). In December 1908, the Church Missionary Society (CMS) moved the school to the Igbein site. The architect, Mr. Horace J. Keswick, was the then Principal of Blaize Memorial Institute. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Salter Edgerton, KCMA (Governor of Southern Nigeria) and the then Alake, Oba Gbadebo humbly carried the first stone for the laying of the foundation on the 21st of December, 1910. By 1911, the uncompleted building was already in use and not until 1976 was the campus totally vacated, though Idiaba campus had been in partial use since 1966.
